After spending time with family over the holiday season, many people and their families are reminded of the importance of planning for the future.

You may find yourself reflecting on how things have changed over the years. It’s not uncommon for the realisation to settle in that certain tasks around the house are becoming more challenging – whether it’s maintaining the garden, keeping up with home repairs, or managing stairs. You might notice too, that your, or your partners health or mobility, isn’t quite what it used to be.

It’s also possible that your children, after spending time with you, may suggest the idea of moving into a retirement village, recognising that a change of environment could offer more support as you age.

For many families, the concept of ‘future-proofing’ becomes top of mind: finding a living arrangement that addresses both current and future needs. This is where retirement villages - designed specifically with aging in mind -come into the conversation. With a new year approaching and family gathered for the holidays, this could be the perfect moment to take the first step.

Choose the right moment
Discussing the idea of moving to a retirement village can be a sensitive topic for some. Perhaps you, your partner, or your family, haven’t envisioned this change in lifestyle. While the initial conversation may feel difficult, it doesn’t have to be stressful. An open approach makes all the difference.

Timing is key; bringing it up during a tense moment can feel abrupt and may lead to resistance. Instead, look for a relaxed time—ideally a quiet moment rather than a busy family gathering. Waiting until after a big family event, like Christmas lunch, helps create a natural and supportive setting for the conversation.

Discuss the benefits
When considering a move, whether for yourself or a loved one, it’s helpful to focus on the many advantages that retirement villages offer. These communities can open the door to an exciting new chapter, providing a supportive environment with opportunities to build new friendships, participate in social activities, and stay active.

A retirement village offers peace of mind, with many offering on-site care homes providing hospital level care if additional support is needed in the future (subject to availability). Added security, dining options and reduced maintenance can ease concerns about living independently. Additionally, well-maintained gardens and outdoor spaces and organised social activities, means residents can enjoy more time focusing on what matters most.

Consider the timing
Early in the new year is an ideal time to begin looking at different retirement village options. The holiday season brings a more relaxed mindset, allowing families to explore local village options, start some long-term planning, and make thoughtful decisions together for the future.

Starting the process early is essential. Just like putting on your running shoes is the toughest part of going for a run, the first step of exploring suitable villages can be the biggest hurdle. On 15 February, most of Metlifecare’s 37 villages, spanning from Kerikeri to Christchurch, will open their doors for customers and their families to drop in for a visit, meet the team, and explore what each village has to offer.

Find the right fit
Finding the right fit is essential for ensuring that you feel comfortable, supported, and truly at home. Each retirement community has its own unique offerings, atmosphere, and lifestyle, so it’s important to look beyond basic amenities and consider personal preferences, social opportunities, and the appropriate level of care.

Ultimately, embracing the new year as a fresh start can transform what might feel like a difficult conversation into a hopeful, supportive dialogue, focused on making the next chapter for you as easy as possible.
