America's Cup rules at Greenwood Park
25 October 2024
Renowned for its inter-village sporting tournaments and outdoor activities, including a beautiful nature walk that winds through the village’s 42 acres of park-like grounds, it’s fair to say Greenwood Park is bit of a ‘sporty spice!’
But lately, it’s a different type of sport that’s got under the residents’ skin – the 37th America’s Cup being sailed off the coast of Spain!
Here’s the crew who have fired up a passion for armchair sailing amongst their fellow residents:
- Derek Dean: chief cheerleader and organiser of the tribute display that dominated the reception area, with Hillary Drummond de Zapata as associate designer.
- Erica Mulder: owner of a magnificent replica America’s Cup trophy which took pride of place in the display, as well as lots of other AM Cup memorabilia (including the original packaging from a pair of Peter Blake supporter red socks, signed by Peter Blake himself!)
- Geoff Tansley: master model builder, who took it upon himself to carefully craft a model Team NZ boat out of Lego bricks!
The reception display and the daily pilgrimages to watch race replays at 7am on the big screen TV really captured the imagination of residents. Some came in their pyjamas, others brought family and friends to pose in front of the full-size solid silver cup.
When Team NZ actually claimed the Auld Mug, it was bubbles all round at 8am. The perfect way to start a winning day!
The actual America’s Cup is evidently the oldest and second most valuable trophy in the world, worth about ~$10 million. We’re not sure of the value of the replica trophy, but it’s fair to say on the 20th of October as Team NZ crossed the line to claim a 7-2 series win over Ineos Britannia and make history as the first team to win three in a row, it was priceless!
